スイスの名門サンガレン大学の模擬WTO委員会が、２００８年度模擬WTOの参加者を募集しています。

自由貿易協定（FTA）や経済協力経済連携協定が各国の間で急速に進む今日、貿易大国として２０世紀を突き進んできた日本が２１世紀にどのような通商政策を取るかに日本経済の未来がかかっていると言っても過言ではありません。

What is the Model WTO?

The Model WTO is an international event with 60 students simulating regular WTO minister conferences. During an intense five-day program in St.Gallen and Geneva, Switzerland, selected international students are given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of both gains and problems of global trade.

How does it work?

Groups of participants are attributed a given country. They must defend its interests in several negotiation rounds. The Model WTO revolves around a central topic; students debate on related issues in specific subcommittees. Participants then get the opportunity to present and discuss the result of their negotiations with WTO experts in Geneva. A Final Declaration is then submitted to the vote and endorsed (or not…) by all participating delegations.

In addition, renowned speakers will provide participants with their unique insight into hot WTO issues and share their own negotiating experience.

What’s the topic this year?

The general theme of this year’s Model will be “Trade & Sustainability”. More specifically, negotiations will concentrate on topics such as WTO rules for Biofuel policies, Intellectual property rights in poor countries, carbon taxes, trade-related safeguards on GM food imports, as well as the role of Special & Differential Treatment (SDT) in promoting sustainable development.
