Neurobiology aims towards an understanding of the function of neurons and ultimately of the brain. In this research school, molecular and genetic approaches will be used to understand how gene products work alone or together in molecular networks to control the development and function of the nervous system. Neuroscientists now have access to detailed genomic information for almost every species of interest, including man. Central to understanding how gene products ultimately determine neuronal and glial function is the ability to manipulate genes (gain of function, loss of function) in an in vivo context. Never before have doctoral students had access to such powerful tools to analyse the molecular basis of brain function.
For example, large scale screening for transcripts that are regulated following genetic or other manipulations of the brain in vivo have become routine. The range of tools available to manipulate or even visualize gene expression in vivo has been greatly extended in recent years (e.g. RNA interference, classical and advanced mouse genetics). In addition genetic tools in mice and other organisms have made it possible to study, in detail, the effects of disease causing mutations in an in vivo context. Indeed, it has become almost routine to inactivate specific genes in a temporal and site-specific manner using conditional mutagenesis. The latest developments in proteomics also mean that it is becoming ever more feasible to investigate directly protein complexes in their cellular context. The combination of this rich methodological armoury plus the fact that many physiological functions of the nervous system are still not understood at a molecular level opens a window of opportunity for a new generation of doctoral students. The aim of this research school will be to provide state-of-the-art training in the use of such techniques and to apply them to elucidate the molecular basis of a neurobiological process. In this context students admitted
to the research school will be expected to pursue a research project designed to understand the molecular basis of normal function or dysfunction of the nervous system.

How to Apply for the International MDC/HU PhD Program

Requirements
We look for high-calibre candidates of any nationality, who are passionate about science, wish to make a difference and are prepared to work hard. Eligible candidates should:

  • hold or expect to obtain (by the end of 2008) a degree equivalent to Masters (by research) or German Diploma in Life Sciences (Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or in a related field)
  • have good command of English;
  • arrange for 2 - 3 Evaluation Letters from scientists who know you from your work, studies or supervised your Masters/ Diploma thesis.

Application Process

Application Closing Date: Wednesday, 23 January, 2008.

Please read Application Guidelines

Please note, that paper applications will not be considered. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Selection Process
Admission to one of our graduate programmes is highly competitive and involves two stages of selection:

(1) candidates are short-listed based on their achievements to date and research interests, and the Evaluation Letters – middle of February, 08

(2) short-listed candidates are invited to Berlin for 5 days interactive selection stage, which involves giving a short presentation with an overview of the candidate’s research skills and experience, discussions with the MDC’s scientists, and a formal interview by the Graduate Commission – middle of April, 08.

During the interview stage candidates will also have a tour of the campus and the labs, and have an opportunity to see Berlin. All related expenses (economy travel, stay at the guest-house or hotel, meals and excursions) are covered by the MDC.

The outcomes of the selection will be made known to all the shortlisted candidates by the end of April, 2008.
